Heart of Darkness Book Cover

Client: Penguin Classics

Role: Designer

Description: A Heart of Darkness cover redesign in the spirit of the great Chip Kidd. This was a fun and challenging project for my illustration-centric mind! The new cover had to be conceptually superior to the current cover and improve on design principles and typography. The redesign depicts a descent into madness after reality has (literally) been turned upside down.

Michigan City Silk Screen Poster

Client: Amtrak

Role: Designer and Illustrator

Description: I set out to create a travel poster for Amtrak In the flavor of Michael Schwab and vintage South Shore Line posters. Michigan City, IN is  a hidden gem and I wanted to show its magic. I wanted to screen print the design so I stuck with 3 PMS colors—the process and result was amazing! There’s something special about rag paper, fresh ink, and a handful of screens.

Scientific Journal Covers and Print Ads

Client: Various at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Role: Designer, Illustrator and Digital Painter

Description: Working as part of the Beckman Institute’s Imaging Technology Group (ITG), these journal covers were created for University of Illinois researchers Neil Davis, Pilgyu Kang and Zidar Xu . Collaborating with 3D visualization specialists Alex Jerez and Payton Focken, I added illustrative elements to 3D rendered images such as user interfaces, textures, and digital painting (e.g. laser effects, brain coloring and overall image coloration). When submitting a cover image it’s always a competition, so our goal was to make eye-catching, communicative, and scientifically accurate images that promote selection by editors. Custom print advertisements were also designed to promote the state-of-the-art ITG Microscopy Suite and online DNA tools developed by The Aksimentiev Group.

IYARA Identity

Client: IYARA sports app

Role: Designer

Description: Identity created for “IYARA”, a sports app focused on optimizing performance in athletics and cross country. The identity is abstracted from a blackbird’s body with a focus on precise, sharp angles– their quick slashing movements and flashes of flight immediately inspires the feeling of swiftness. Nature has optimized its creatures over millions of years; we use our technology to constantly optimize our lives. That is the essence of this design.

Barbell Monkey CrossFit Logo Concepts

Client: Chase Sailer (gym owner)

Role: Designer and Illustrator

Description: Barbell Monkey CrossFit (BMCF), a new CrossFit gym in the Champaign-Urbana area, needed a logo for their business. Owner Chase Sailer wanted a clean, simple, and modern logo that was appropriate for all ages and conveyed a sense of patriotism. Chase selected the concept that incorporated the letters “B” and “M” into a red white and blue emblem (left) but also really enjoyed the monkey concept (right; inspired by an African mandrill!).

AKIRA 2016 Movie Poster

Client: Self

Role: 3D Modeler, Designer and Illustrator

Description: The 1988 animated classic “Akira” has always inspired me (just can’t get enough of that cyber punk sci-fi). I set out to create a modern movie poster to showcase this masterpiece—in particular, the overbearing cityscape threatens to swallow the capsule/s (an item found throughout the film) and creates a sense of foreboding or dread. I modeled the scene in Maya, rendered in Mental Ray and did all of the compositing and digital painting in Adobe Photoshop.

Caffé Paradiso Identity

Client: Caffé Paradiso

Role: Designer and Illustrator

Description: Caffé Paradiso is a fantastic (also my personal favorite) coffee shop in Urbana, IL. They serve Intelligentsia coffee, tea and pastries. It is typically a busy place, especially when students have finals, and the interior has lots of personality, stone floors, warm colors, and interesting, mismatched furniture. With this aesthetic in mind, asymmetric and painterly art deco design elements were employed to give them a brand update.
